SUMMARY:Eagle Watch on the CT River
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Winter Eagle Watch on the CT River\, and get outside to see the wonders right here in our own backyard! \nWinter’s cold brings dozens of Bald Eagles down the Connecticut River from Canada in search of ice – free fishing. In recent years\, over 50 eagles have wintered on the lower Connecticut River. Their 6 – 8 foot wing span make the Bald Eagle the largest predator in North America. \nLeader Jerry Connolly of The Audubon Shop will help participants spot eagles from a variety of locations on the river\, and will discuss the bird’s natural history on this land – based trip. We’ll also spot ducks\, birds of prey\, songbirds and whatever else comes into view. \nThe Bald Eagle’s recovery in our state (since there were none occurring in CT in the 1950’s) is considered a major environmental victory. It is now estimated that up to 100 eagles winter in Connecticut\, from December to early March\, along major rivers and at large reservoirs. The number of wintering eagles has been increasing slowly\, and depends on the severity of each winter. \nThe natural year-round habitat of bald eagles is near lakes\, marshes\, rivers\, or seacoasts\, where there are tall trees nearby for nesting and roosting and fish for eating. Bald Eagles feed primarily on fish\, but they also are opportunistic predators and scavengers that will eat anything that can be caught easily or scavenged\, such as waterfowl\, small and large mammals\, and livestock carrion. In addition\, they have a reputation of being thieves\, and can be seen robbing other raptors or gulls of their catch. \nA ticket makes a great gift! \nThere is little to no hiking on this tour. We simply drive from spot to spot\, park\, and walk down to the river. Each car will get paper directions to follow along\, it’s EASY! \n**Bring your binoculars and camera! \nBinoculars may be rented for $4.00 each\, please call the shop to reserve. \nQuestions about our Eagle Watch on the CT River\, give us a ring! 203-245-9056  \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nPlease follow instructions. \n\nChoose a lunch\nCall us with a credit card to reserve your spot\n\nParticipants MUST pre-register\, and may call us with a credit card to reserve a spot.   203-245-9056 \nYour $33 ticket includes a delicious soup-of-the-day and sandwich luncheon at Otter Cove Restaurant in Old Saybrook\, CT.\nPlease pick one of the following for each person in your group\, before you give us a ring: \n1. Pulled Pork Sandwich \n2. Cheeseburger \n3. Chicken Caesar Salad \n4. Veggie Melt Sandwich (with cheese) \nIncluded: coffee or tea\, soup of the day and sandwich. \nNot included: other beverages and gratuity. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nCarpool with Jerry to 5 unique and excellent viewing spots along the river. SUMMARY:Saturday Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset
DESCRIPTION:Our Saturday Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, is a great way to learn about migrating birds here along CT’s shoreline. Which birds migrate and why? Migrating hawks\, eagles\, owls\, shorebirds\, waterbirds\, and songbirds can all be seen at one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nBirds migrating south are sometimes pushed by westerly winds towards the shore\, so they hug the coastline. Birds of prey (hawks\, falcons and eagles) can often be spotted soaring overhead or hunting along their routes. Several songbirds exchange bright spring feathers for more drab non-breeding colors\, and Jerry will help you identify these sometimes confusing differences. Shorebirds\, which have started their southerly migration after finishing nesting in August\, can often be seen in the various wet areas. \nImprove your ear as we listen for birds before we see them. Get to know which birds are likely streaming through and why. Learn about habitats. \nAlways a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of fall. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air! \n\nWalks at Hammonasset will be held each Saturday\, Sept. 13 through Nov. 20\, 2025\nParticipants will meet Jerry at The Audubon Shop parking lot at 7:50 am\, carpool to the park at 8 and return at about 10:30.\n$6.00 cash charge per person – pay when you arrive\, please.\nBeginners are welcome.\nNo need to pre-register.\nEach guided walk takes place from 8-10:30 am.\nBinoculars are necessary and may be rented for $4\, please call to rent.\nTelescopes and cameras are welcome.\nDress for the weather. Pouring rain will cancel.\nCall the shop on any Friday to double check weather\, if needed. 203-245-9056

SUMMARY:Wednesday Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott for a Wednesday Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison. Several songbirds exchange bright spring feathers for more drab non-breeding colors\, and Jerry will help you id these sometimes confusing differences. \nShorebirds\, which have already started their southerly migration after finishing nesting in August\, can often be seen in the various wet areas. \nImprove your ear as we listen for birds before we see them. SUMMARY:Spring Migration Bird Walks - Saturdays
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and Co. for a small group Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nHammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison is widely regarded as one of the premier birding spots in CT\, and springtime migration is a lot of fun. Approximately 240 species of birds occur there annually\, as the park boasts diverse habitats such as marsh\, open water\, woodland\, grassland and shoreline. \nTropical migrants in their bright breeding finery will be seen as they return north to nesting grounds.
