SUMMARY:Saturday Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and Co. for a small group Saturday Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nHammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison is widely regarded as one of the premier birding spots in CT\, and springtime migration is a lot of fun. Approximately 240 species of birds occur there annually\, as the park boasts diverse habitats such as marsh\, open water\, woodland\, grassland and shoreline. \nTropical migrants in their bright breeding finery will be seen as they return north to nesting grounds. We’ll be searching with eyes and ears for shorebirds\, ducks\, birds of prey\, and vibrant songbirds. This is a good chance to learn bird song. Jerry has a great ear after years of experience. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced birders\, alike. \nOur weekend Spring Bird Walks run Saturdays April 13 through June 15\, 2024. \nThese are always a surprise and always entertaining. Birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of spring. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air! \nNo need to pre-register. \nOur number one priority is to keep everyone healthy. We reserve the right to cancel a trip\, should circumstances change. \n\nMeet Jerry at 7:50am in the parking lot at the shop.\nSuitable for beginners!\nCharge is $6 per person\, paid in cash before we depart the shop.\nDress for the weather\, extra layers are advised.\nHeavy rain will cancel\, call or email us the day before if doubtful.\nPlease bring binoculars\, or they are available to rent beforehand for $4.00.\nWe will carpool to the park.\nIf you have a telescope\, bring it!

SUMMARY:Fall Bird Walk at Hammonasset
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and Co. for a Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison. Migrating hawks\, eagles\, owls\, shorebirds\, waterbirds\, and songbirds can all be seen at one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nBirds migrating south are sometimes pushed by westerly winds towards the shore\, so they hug the coastline. Birds of prey (hawks\, falcons and eagles) can often be spotted soaring overhead or hunting along their routes. Several songbirds exchange bright spring feathers for more drab non-breeding colors\, and Jerry will help you id these sometimes confusing differences. \nAlways a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of fall. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air! \n\nWalks at Hammonasset will be held each Saturday Sept. 16 through Nov. 18\, 2023\nParticipants will meet Jerry at The Audubon Shop at 7:50 am\, carpool to the park at 8 and return at about 10:30.\n$6.00 cash charge per person – pay when you arrive\, please.\nBeginners are welcome.\nNo need to pre-register.\nThe guided walk takes place from 8-10:30 am.\nBinoculars are necessary and may be rented for $4\, please call to rent.

SUMMARY:Eagle Watch on the CT River
DESCRIPTION:Winter’s cold brings dozens of Bald Eagles down the Connecticut River from Canada in search of ice – free fishing. In recent years\, over 50 eagles have wintered on the lower Connecticut River. Their 6 – 8 foot wing span make the Bald Eagle the largest predator in North America. \nJoin us on one of our Winter Eagle Watches on the CT River! Leader Jerry Connolly of The Audubon Shop will help participants spot eagles from a variety of locations on the river\, and will discuss the bird’s natural history on this land – based trip. We’ll also spot ducks\, birds of prey\, songbirds and whatever else comes into view. \nThe Bald Eagle’s recovery in our state (since there were none occurring in CT in the 1950’s) is considered a major environmental victory. It is now estimated that up to 100 eagles winter in Connecticut\, from December to early March\, along major rivers and at large reservoirs. The number of wintering eagles has been increasing slowly\, and depends on the severity of each winter. \nThe natural year-round habitat of bald eagles is near lakes\, marshes\, rivers\, or seacoasts\, where there are tall trees nearby for nesting and roosting and fish for eating. Bald Eagles feed primarily on fish\, but they also are opportunistic predators and scavengers that will eat anything that can be caught easily or scavenged\, such as waterfowl\, small and large mammals\, and livestock carrion. In addition\, they have a reputation of being thieves\, and can be seen robbing other raptors or gulls of their catch. \n**Bring your binoculars and camera! \nBinoculars may be rented for $4.00 each\, please call the shop to reserve. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nPlease follow instructions. \n\nChoose a lunch\nCall us with a credit card to reserve your spot\n\nParticipants MUST pre-register\, and may call us with a credit card to reserve a spot.   203-245-9056 \nYour $30 ticket includes a delicious soup-of-the-day and sandwich luncheon at Otter Cove Restaurant in Old Saybrook\, CT.\nPlease pick one of the following for each person in your group\, before you give us a ring: \n1. Pulled Pork Sandwich \n2. Cheeseburger \n3. Chicken Caesar Salad \n4. Veggie Melt Sandwich (with cheese) \nIncluded: coffee or tea\, soup of the day and sandwich. \nNot included: other beverages and gratuity. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nCarpool with Jerry to 5 unique and excellent viewing spots along the river. (This is not a boat trip). \n*Where and when to meet? \nIt depends on where you’re coming from.\n \n*The Audubon Shop\, 907 Boston Post Rd in Madison CT at 7:45am \n-OR- \n*At the first location on the river in Haddam\, Eagle Landing State Park\, at 8:30am \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \n*Directions to Eagle Landing State Park for those who live farther away from Madison: \n    – RT9 to Exit 7 \n    – (Long 2 mile exit ramp) \n    – Left at stop onto RTS 82 & 154 \n    – Right at first light onto RT 82 \n    – Follow towards Haddam Bridge \n    – Take the last driveway on the right BEFORE the bridge into Eagle Landing State Park \n

SUMMARY:Fall Bird Walks
17 through Nov. 19\, 2022\nParticipants will meet Jerry at The Audubon Shop at 7:50 am\, carpool to the park at 8 and return at about 10:30.\n$6.00 charge per person – pay when you arrive\, please.\nBeginners are welcome.\nNo need to pre-register.\nThe guided walk takes place from 8-10:30 am.\nBinoculars are necessary and may be rented for $4\, please call to rent.
