Native Plant Trust is a truly great treasure to follow.It’s impossible to overstate the significant role insects play in pollinating flowers and distributing genetic materials from plants across distances. This includes seed dispersal by ants, a fascinating process known as myrmecochory. This word derives from the ancient Greek “myrmeks,” literally, “circular dance,” a terrific way to describe this intricate, mutualistic cycle of exchange. When you next blink, it will be March, and the ephemeral heralds of spring will have begun to rise from the cold ground—genera including Sanguinaria, Corydalis, Claytonia, and Viola. In the Northeast, many of these spring ephemerals are propagated by ants. When they brighten the ground, they will have benefited from this mutualistic relationship with ant communities. And the ants benefit from highly nutritious food packages, or elaiosomes, attached to the seeds produced by some of these early-spring genera. Enticed by this delicacy, the ants carry these seeds back to their nests, eat the elaiosomes, and deposit the seeds underground. The plant then germinates, grows, and produces more seeds—a circular dance indeed. Approximately 5% of the world’s plants require myrmecochory to thrive and reproduce, which highlights the importance of protecting this precarious balance of plant-insect ecology. We should consider our collective impacts on both plant and insect communities across Earth, and contemplate our role in the circular dance. —Director of Conservation Michael Piantedosi
