Description

Our Hanging Grass Roosting Pocket is especially beneficial to non-migrating songbirds during the winter months. They provide much needed refuge from harsh storms, wind, freezing rain, heavy snow and the bitter cold.

Natural materials help keep birds safe from predators, as the colors blend in with surroundings and do not attract unwanted attention. A refuge made of rough material also makes entering and exiting easier.

**What’s the difference between nesting and roosting from a bird’s standpoint?

A nesting box, bird house, or even an open nest on a tree or bush is a bird’s first “home”. But, don’t think of it in human terms. Birds use a nest strictly for laying eggs and rearing young. Once the young birds fledge or leave the nest, they do not return to it. They go off into the woods, foraging and learning the ropes. Sometimes parents are there to help feed them as they grow and mature.

Roosting is done at night. They find a safe place to sleep, and enter it secretively so that predators don’t see. Some birds nestle together on a branch in an evergreen or under leaves for warmth, some roost singularly.

While this Hanging Grass Roosting Pocket may be attractive to small birds during breeding time, we feel its best to bring it inside for storage in the spring and put it back out in the fall. Use it for roosting only. The overall dimensions of the pocket are not as safe for nestlings as a true wooden nesting box will be. Nestlings are more vulnerable to both predation and falling out of the pocket as they get bigger. Word to the wise.
