What to do when your hummingbirds leave…

Hummers leaving? Yes, we’ll miss them too, but here’s a great thought – use your Window Glass Hanger for a peanut feeder! If you’ve been in the shop this summer, you will have seen our active hummingbird feeder hanging on our back picture window by a two-suction-cup hanger, called the Window Glass Hanger. We have been using the same technique for hanging our hummer feeders (and more) at home for years, with great results. Year ’round use is possible.

It’s September, which marks the beginning of the end of hummingbird season here in Connecticut. Yes, it’s sad, but the phrase “absence makes the heart grow fonder” surely applies here. Plus, once Fall is in full swing, it’s a great opportunity to replace your window mounted hummingbird feeder with a window mounted peanut feeder.

By mid-September, our Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are heading south. It may be time to think of a new feeder for the window, that will bring some fun action in.

Woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice and other backyard favorites others go NUTS for our shelled peanuts! If you can’t get hummers at your window, at least you can enjoy up-close views of very social Titmice and Chickadees, and Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, as you sip your morning coffee.

One of our favorite peanut feeders that is inexpensive and light weight for your Window Glass Hanger is our Wire Mesh Peanut Feeder. Made of sturdy metal with a thick black screen, this is one that we personally use at home all fall and winter.

There are many methods to hang our feeders in front of your windows. We do not have all of our “hanging hardware” on our website, as some of them are a little cumbersome to ship. One example of a sturdy hanger is our Adjustable Swing-away Arm, pictured here. It’s made in the USA of solid 1/2″ round steel, is powder coated to resist the elements, and has a 16.5″ reach that enables it to swing in front of your favorite window for picture perfect viewing. We currently have a Brome Squirrel Buster Peanut Plus hanging on an Adjustable Sing-away Arm in front of the window behind our front counter, and we see non-stop action there all day. Come take a look!

How to Attract Eastern Bluebirds to Your Yard

In terms of beauty and tameness, the Eastern Bluebird (Sialis sialis) has few rivals. During the first three quarters of the last century, their numbers greatly declined, due to the loss of open-field habitat and the ill-advised introduction of the House Sparrow (1851) and the European Starling (1890), both formidable nest competitors. Today, because of… Continue Reading
