#nopesticides #birdwatching #pollinatorsWe are concluding #PollinatorWeek with a post about the biggest threats to our pollinator species. Many of these threats affect more than just pollinators, including birds, bats, reptiles, fish, and amphibians. By far, the greatest threat is the loss of habitat, which includes land conversion, habitat degradation, and forest fragmentation. In the last decade, turf and lawn cover has increased across Connecticut and is now the largest managed “crop” by land area. Development has continued to fragment habitat into smaller and smaller pieces that are further apart from one another, making it difficult for some species to stay connected and find all the resources they need.

The use of pesticides both in smaller backyard settings and the larger landscape also has negative impacts on pollinating species. Pesticides can include chemicals used to kill insects and plants viewed as “pests”, but nearly all of these have broader impacts, including harming pollinators and other beneficial insects. Even products marketed as natural, non-toxic, and organic have been shown to kill beneficial insects in their adult or larval stages. Pollinators and other beneficial insects can be exposed to pesticides through several pathways besides direct contact. They can be exposed through contaminated nesting material, such as when a butterfly lays its eggs on a plant that’s been treated with pesticides. Native ground nesting bees can also be exposed when their nesting areas along the overgrown edges of a yard are treated with pesticides. Pollinators can also be exposed when they come into contact with pesticide residues, which can be brought back to their nests. In fact, one study found that 90% of domesticated honey bee hives had high levels of pesticide residences, which can affect both adults and developing young.

Finally, diseases spread from domesticated and non-native species to wild native species has a detrimental impact on some pollinating species. Diseases and other pathogens associated with domesticated European honey bees that are used for pollinating many of our crops have spread to wild populations of our native pollinators. Additionally, some species of native bumble bee have been domesticated for more controlled pollinator services, but these too have developed diseases that have spread to wild populations.

The combination of these threats have contributed to the decline and local extinction of many species that were once common and widespread just a half-century ago. So what can we all do to help?

1. Reduce or eliminate pesticide use and support agricultural practices that do the same. Apply the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and find out if your local farms do as well.

2. Promote and enhance the native plant community in your area by growing a native plant garden, leaving native trees, removing non-native species, and reducing lawn space. Create your own “pollinator pathway” that will help connect your pollinator safe-space with others nearby.

3. Get involved locally, such as with a “Pollinator pathway” group to share ideas and experiences.

4. Improve your observational skills and learn about the needs of your local pollinators.

Listen when you have the time.
We have these sparrows in Madison at Hammonasset.
#saltmarshsparrow #madisonct #WatchingNatureWhat does a small bird have to teach us about how our coastal ecosystems are affected by climate change and rising sea levels? Listen to a conversation with Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge biological technician Bri Benvenuti as she explains how the saltmarsh sparrow is a sort of coastal canary in the coal mine for salt marsh health and how humans can have a thing or two to learn from their plucky, resilient habits.
